What Is Anthocyanin And How Can It Save Your Life?

March 29, 2018 By Gina Bonanno Lemos Leave a Comment

anthocyanin is a phytonutrient in plant foods that prevents and reverses disease

Potent Compounds Found Only In Plant Foods

Anthocyanin is a type of phytonutrient that can only be found in deep red, blue, and purple-colored plant foods such as beets, purple potatoes, blueberries, and other fruits and vegetables with similar, rich colors.

Phytonutrients are directly responsible for the prevention and reversal of disease and illness.

How Anthocyanin Compounds Can Save Your Life

These natural compounds have been shown to prevent and reverse just about every major disease and health issue known to man(1). I’ve compiled list of the health benefits of anthocyanin below:

Improved Immune System Function

When you ingest anthocyanin, your cytokine levels increase. This is important for your immune system because cytokines are molecules which help cells communicate in your body, to stimulate your immune system when you’re suffering from internal inflammation, disease, or an infection.

Protection Against Hormone-Related Disease And Disorders

Anthocyanin produces what is known as an estrogenic effect. This means that they help to regulate your production of estrogen – a hormone that is often involved in the development of disease when there is too much or too little in your body.

Protection Against Inflammation-Based Disease And Illness

As mentioned above, anthocyanins have anti-inflammatory properties. Since we now know that internal inflammation is the basis for all disease, these phytonutrients are essential in the prevention and reversal the most life-threatening health issues of our time. They’re also crucial in the prevention and reversal of life-altering afflictions such as arthritis, and other maladies rooted in inflammation.

Protection And Improvement Of Vision

Studies show that the consumption of anthocyanin improves vision by restoring a protein called rhodopsin. This protein, which is found in the retina, is responsible for converting light into electrical signals.

It has also been found that anthocyanin can enhance vision by repairing photoreceptor cells. This is done by suppressing pro-inflammatory molecules(2).

Improved Memory And Motor Function

Anthocyanin has been proven to improve memory and motor function, and to also reverse symptoms of age-related memory and motor function decline.

Obesity And Diabetes Prevention

When added to a high-fat diet, anthocyanin reduces sugar and insulin levels and prevents the secretion of excess leptin in the body – a hormone that stimulates your appetite and results in increased body fat when levels are high.

In addition, the consumption of anthocyanin has been shown to reduce swelling of the pancreas – an organ that is directly involved in the prevention or development of diabetes.

Cancer Protection

In addition to the anti-inflammatory effects of anthocyanin, these vital phytonutrients protect you against the initiation and metastasis of cancer in several ways including the way in which they work ward off oxidative stress (a sort of internal rusting in your body) and repair damaged DNA.

Anthocyanin also blocks specific pathways (a term used to describe certain changes to proteins, enzymes, etc…) that lead to the inception and proliferation of cancer.

Prevention And Reversal Of Cardiovascular Disease

Consuming anthocyanin compounds is believed to prevent and reverse diseases of the cardiovascular system by protecting your body and cells from oxidative stress and initiating the release of nitric oxide in your body to relax the walls of blood vessels, so that there is more room for blood to flow where it’s needed.

Anthocyanin is also responsible for strengthening your capillary walls and preventing the formation of platelets which can cause clots in your arteries and lead to a major cardiac event.

In fact, a study of women performed in the United Kingdom showed that anthocyanin intake reduced the risk of heart attack by 32 percent(3). This is very exciting news, considering that heart disease remains the number one cause of death in the United States, with women outnumbering men in the statistics.

Who You Live With Determines Your Disease Risk More Than Genetics

March 17, 2018 By Gina Bonanno Lemos Leave a Comment

lifestyle factors are more important than genetics in regard to disease risk due to changes in your microbiomeEnvironmental Factors Outweigh Genetics In Regard To Your Microbiome

The composition of your gut microbiota is the result of lifestyle and environmental factors rather than genetics.

This was the published finding of scientists from Weizmann Institute in Israel, after studying and comparing the microbiome of more than 1,000 healthy individuals with diverse ancestries – some of whom were genetically related and others who were unrelated yet lived in the same home(1).

Less Than Two Percent Of Your Microbiome Is A Result Of Genetics

The microbiome, which is the community of healthy and unhealthy bacteria that reside in your intestinal tract and throughout your body, is overwhelmingly influenced by diet and lifestyle choices, according to these researchers and others.

Of the participants in the study, researchers discovered that unrelated individuals who lived in the same home shared “significant similarities” in the composition of their microbiome. At the same time, individuals who were related and shared the same DNA, yet did not live together, often had little in common in regard to their microbiome. In fact, the scientists estimate that less than two percent of our microbiome is actually inherited, after reviewing studies of twins.

Nationality Has Little To Do With Gut Bacteria

Furthermore, the study revealed that ancestry and nationality have little to do with the species and number of bacteria in the microbiome.

To confirm their findings, researchers conducted a second cohort study of 836 participants in a completely different part of the world and received identical results.

Your Microbiome Determines Your Health And Weight

So, why is this a big deal?

Because the scientists also determined that microbiota composition can predict our likelihood of developing diseases and our inability to maintain a healthy weight. The number of bacteria and species type correlates with health and disease indicators such as fasting glucose levels, body mass index, HDL cholesterol levels, waist to hip ratio, waist circumference and others.

Participants in the study with specific types and levels of bacteria were at greater risk of health and weight issues leading researchers to conclude that obesity and disease risk can be mitigated by manipulating the human microbiome with diet, exercise, and avoidance of detrimental environmental factors.

Some Of The Best New Plant-Based Products At Natural Products Expo West

March 13, 2018 By Gina Bonanno Lemos Leave a Comment

Some Of The Greatest Plant-Based Product Finds At Natural Products Expo West

hemp2o plant based drinks from natural products expo west contain plant proteinSo, by Sunday of last weekend I vowed to never eat chocolate ever again in my life. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I was SO sick of it. I tried just about every vegan chocolate product in every area of the Natural Products Expo and I was ready to puke.

However, that sentiment lasted all of 36 hours and I’ve found my love for that brown bit ‘o goodness once again (as you’ll see from some of my top picks below).

So, on to the incredible, new plant-based products:
  • Hands down, the most exciting new vegan products I sampled at Expo West were No Evil – a line of plant-based meat replacement products that are AAAAHHHMAZING! I tried all of their vegan meats and was equally impressed with each one. They offer plant-based sausage, plant-based chorizo, plant-based “chicken” slices, and a plant-based pulled “pork.” I was doing the yummy food dance in the aisle 😉

  • My next favorite (which I was just as excited about, but it’s not a new company) is Miyoko’s new line of vegan cheese spreads. OMG! I tried several options and all I can say is WOW! All of her products are and were awesome, but her new plant-based cheddar spread is the stuff that dreams are made of. It tastes so much like the real thing it’s crazy. Unfortunately, these new items won’t be in stores until this summer. However, I’m working on their marketing director, to see if I can get them to share these cheesy delights at Your Plant-Based Guide Conference in May.

  • Hemp 2O is another product that I really enjoyed. I tasted a few flavors of their hemp water and they were delicious – refreshing and not too sweet, but they’ll definitely take care of any sugar craving you might have.

  • Loving Earth is a company that makes “mouthgasmic” (Their word, not mine. But, I quite agree and I had a bit of an “episode” at their booth. Hopefully, there’s no video evidence.) raw, organic, vegan chocolate. Flavors include dark, cheesecake, creamy, turkish delight, berry crunch hazelnut, salted caramel, raspberry (my fav), and mint. What makes this plant-based chocolate so unique is the fact that it’s sweetened with only coconut sugar only or agave nectar. It is also so the most creamy vegan chocolate I’ve ever had, which may be due to their use of raw cashews in some of the flavors.

  • Another great, new product is Om Organic Mushroom Nutrition. This company makes a wide range of organic mushroom powders that can be used in a multitude of ways, to incorporate the monumental health benefits of mushrooms into your diet.

  • Biena is a company that makes chick pea (garbanzo bean) snacks and, while that may not sound appealing, let me assure you that they’re yummy. I especially like their BBQ flavor, and their dark chocolate covered chickpeas were great too (there’s that chocolate again). Although, not all of their products are vegan, the majority are, and they provide five to six grams of plant protein per serving.

  • I was super excited to find Partake Foods – a female owned company that makes delicious, plant-based cookies with whole food, secret ingredients that prevent and reverse disease, such as sprouted ancient grains, pumpkin, carrots, and sweet potatoes. These delectable little bites are also gluten-free for those suffering from a gluten intolerance or celiac disease.
