The following Food For The Soul Story was graciously shared by Yorba Linda community member and volunteer, Kathleen Boock:
A Hero Helping Heroes
Bridget Blehm and her husband Ed started the East Lake boat parade 24 years ago. Her current passion is her non-profit organization “For Families of Active Military” which exists to support our military families. FFAM provides a huge Thanksgiving meal for Marines and soldiers in the East Lake Community clubhouse on Thanksgiving.
In addition, FFAM sponsors the “giving tree” that is set up every year in the clubhouse. The tree has cards with names of military families and their Christmas wishes. Anyone can pick one or more cards from the tree and provide that requested gift. FFAM then wraps and delivers all of the gifts a little before Christmas and it is incredibly heartwarming to see how generous everyone is.
FFAM Helps Military Families In Need
Several years ago, when 2 Yorba Linda Marines were killed in Afghanistan, community members went into action to help their families by providing meals and assisting at the reception for Sgt Major Robert Cottle. For Families of Active Military also provides for families on an as needed basis, so Bridget set up a warehouse to store donated household items to be given to military families in need. The non-profit group also organizes special events, such as tickets to Disneyland for military families, with a parent that is about to be deployed. FFAM also requests donations of gently used prom dresses, which are donated to Marine wives for the annual Marine ball.
There are so many ways this wonderful group serves our military families and it’s all due to Bridget’s tireless efforts – she organizes ALL of it.
