You Don’t Procrastinate About Burgers And Fries
Why Don’t We Put Off The Bad Stuff? Have you ever thought about that? Why is it that we find excuses to put off doing what we know we should and will make our lives better, but you never hear anyone say, “maybe I’ll just eat that burger and fries tomorrow”, or “maybe I’ll start drinking more next week”.
Why is it that we seem so hell bent on doing things that are bad for us right away, yet the things that will really help us and change our lives for the better are put off for another day, week, or year?
Is it laziness? Is it fear? While these 2 things are factors, and underlying causes, the primary reason is our desire for immediate gratification, more than anything else. We want to feel good in the moment and so we disregard the long term goals we have and benefits that truly rational behaviors will bring us.
Are You Practicing What You Preach?
How can we expect our children to eat their vegetables first, clean their rooms first, or do their chores first, if we won’t?
We need to practice what we preach and we need reminders staring us straight in the face, so we can’t ignore the current reality or future consequences anymore. With that in mind, one of the best inventions is the split screen app. They’re super easy to download and use, even for the technically challenged. There are also tons of free options out there, so just log into the app store and download the version of your choice. Once you’ve got a split screen app on your phone, you can start creating your before and after photos, to get yourself up and running… literally or metaphorically speaking, depending on what you’d like to accomplish.
If you want to lose weight and get down to the size you were when you first got married, create a split screen picture of your pre-married self and a current photo. Download this split screen to your computer and make it your screen saver, or post it above your computer, on the fridge and in front of the treadmill that you WILL run on every day (these pics will get you on there each day, right?) .
Find Your TRUE Motivation?
When clients talk about their motivation for getting in shape or eating healthy, I notice that the reasons start out pretty shallow. I hear things like, “I want to look good in my bikini”, or “I want to go back to wearing a bikini, instead of a one piece.” Or they might say something like, “I want to lose weight before my class reunion”. When I dig a little deeper, the real reasons and feelings begin to surface. What they really want is to be healthy enough to remember who their children are, when they reach 80 years old. Or they want to feel desired by their spouse again, because they really question whether or not he or she still loves them.
You may be tempted to give yourself surface answers to why you want to change something in your life, but I urge you to go deeper and keep asking the simple question of “why”, until you get to an answer that you know is absolutely raw and real.
Maybe you need more money? For many people, money means things, but for some people, money means freedom, more time with family and friends, or pursuing your true passion. If that’s the case, then put your loved ones pictures everywhere, or post pictures of the places you’ll be able to go and things you’ll be able to do with that freedom. You can use the split screen for financial motivation as well- Take photos of your credit card statements and bank statements, then use a photo editing software to change the balance to what you’d like it to be. Don’t have mad computer skills? No problem, old school white out and a pen work just as well. Once you’ve got your real photo and what I call your “universe request photo”, make a split screen and post the photos everywhere.
Health Brings Abundance To All Areas Of Life
One sure way to save money and have the time, freedom, memory and strength to enjoy life, is by getting and staying healthy. With health insurance, treatment and prescription costs soaring, you’ll save a future fortune, if you make a commitment to healthy choices today. You’ll also have a better chance of being able to dance at your grandchild’s wedding, jet set around the globe, and reminisce about the good ole days, if you keep your body strong and mind sharp with proper nutrition and daily exercise.
Fake It Til You Make Yourself Healthy
To fake it til you make it and stay in the zone, put your subconscious to work for you every night. Before you go to sleep, visualize yourself flushing prescriptions down the toilet or throwing them in the trash. See yourself in your doctor’s office and hear him or her saying something like, “you’re so healthy, you don’t need your medication anymore”. Imagine, and allow yourself to feel the sensations and emotions of getting out of bed in the morning, unassisted and without any aches or pains, and walking into your kitchen in the morning, at 90 years of age.
The great thing about your subconscious is that it’s very naive- it believes anything you tell it. Your subconscious literally doesn’t know the difference between what you imagine or think about, and what’s actually happening. It just stores all of the data you put in, and then sends signals to your body, according to whether that data is good or bad. And because of this mind, body connection, you’ll start to feel healthy and have more energy. This can lead to all kinds of crazy things, like intentional physical activity for the first time in decades, or not going back for second helpings.
So remember, you can always smoke those cigarettes, eat that row of Oreo cookies and watch that 3 hours of TV tomorrow. For today, do something outrageous, like taking your dog for a long walk.
