On the heels of the World Health Organization’s report on the carcinogenic effects of glyphosate, many news outlets reported yesterday, that Chipotle Mexican Grill is now serving GMO free food. It’s hard to tell if these reports were written by overenthusiastic GMO critics, or if they simply didn’t do their homework, and were misled by statements on Chipotle’s websites.
I will admit that, at first glance, it appears that Chipotle has completely gone GMO free. With verbiage such as, “Why did we remove GMOs from our food?” and “When it comes to our food, genetically modified ingredients don’t make the cut“, it’s easy to see why some people would assume that the fast food giant has banished this evil ingredient from their entire menu.
However, after clicking on the equally deceptive “A Farewell To GMOs” link and reading ALL of the details, especially the very last section entitled, “what about beverages and animal feed?“, it becomes clear that Chipotle is “working” to phase out this disease causing ingredient over time, but has not yet come up with non GMO alternatives for all of their menu items.
What IS GMO Free At Chipotle Mexican Grill?
You can now rest assured that the Sofritas and beef are GMO free at Chipotle, as the company uses organic soy for their tofu entrees and only grass fed cows for their beef dishes. In addition, Chipotle is using GMO free oil (rice bran and sunflower oils) for frying and deep frying, and their corn has always been non-GMO.
It’s important to note that Chipotle’s chicken and pork still contain genetically modified substances, as the majority of animals raised for human consumption in the United States, are fed a diet of 100 percent GMO grain (corn, soy and wheat products). Also, most beverages contain GMO corn, and Chipotle has yet to determine what they will offer as a replacement or alternative.
Follow Chipotles Lead Or Suffer The Consequences
Although Chipolte’s timing may seem to be an orchestrated attempt to ride the non-GMO wave, now that a global health organization can back them up with scientifically formulated concerns, this change was already in the works.
Chipotle has proven that they’re willing to take bold steps to improve their image and the safety of the food they serve their customers. While this is due, in no small part, to pressure from incredible activists such as Vani Hari (AKA The Food Babe), you have to give credit to Chipotle’s leadership. They have made smart business decisions that no other fast food chain is willing to make, and one can only hope that others will follow suit.
If the leaders of other fast so-called food restaurants have any common sense at all they’ll follow Chipotle’s example, or they risk losing a huge amount of the market share from educated consumers that do possess common sense. Although, maybe that’s not the demographic that other fast food restaurants are targeting? I’m just sayin…
A good example of the shift in consciousness, and a demand for healthier and safe choices, is the recent closure of approximately 700 McDonald’s restaurants worldwide. This comes in the wake of a 2 year earning slump by the once untouchable, financial Goliath. If this doesn’t serve as a wake-up call to all other fast food CEOs, I don’t know what will.
Chipotles GMO Free Plan Is Quite An Undertaking
Of course, we’ll never know what the intention was behind the misleading text on Chipotle’s websites. What I do know, is that Chipotle is to be commended for leading the charge towards healthier food and a healthier planet. And what they’re planning is no small task, as nearly all food in the United States is tainted with GMOs of some sort. The biggest culprits, of course, being soy and corn ingredients, which are found in an astounding number of products, under a multitude of deceptive names that most consumers don’t even recognize as corn or soy.
Chipotle May Be The Final Nail In The GMO Coffin
I’m very curious to see how Chipotle handles the soda issue, as nearly all soft drinks have GMO ingredients in them, in the form of corn syrup or high fructose corn syrup. Will Chipotle begin importing soft drinks from other countries that have long banned GMOs, such as Coca-Cola from Mexico? We’ll have to wait and see, but one thing that we know for certain- this spells THE END for the bio tech mega giants that have relied on these GMO products to make them billions of dollars over the years. And I, for one, can’t wait to dance on their graves for all of the harm they’ve done to We The People!
