Not only is this apple salad an awesomely, delicious, summer dish loaded with plant protein, but you could put a cape around it and an S on the bowl when you serve it – it’s that much of a disease-fighting superhero!
Here’s why you may want to add this meal to your family’s regular rotation, even after the weather grows cold:
The primary ingredient in this dish, apple, has been shown to reduce and possibly even prevent diseases such as cancer, asthma, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Apples are powerful due to the fact that they contain loads of disease-fighting fiber and phytochemicals, including quercetin, catechin, phloridizin, and chlorogenic acid. In addition to decreasing disease-causing oxidation in the body, the vital nutrients in apples lower cholesterol levels and can inhibit the spread of cancer.
Lemon is rich in vitamin C, and therefore another perfect source of antioxidants linked to the prevention of stroke, cancer, diabetes, asthma, heart disease, and obesity. Lemons are commonly used in dietary cleanses, due to their ability to help people shed unwanted pounds, detoxify impurities, increase energy, recharge the immune system, and promote a glowing, healthy complexion.
Yet another antioxidant powerhouse loaded with vitamins C and E, and a great source of fiber, cranberries are known for their ability to improve the immune system, prevent and treat urinary tract infections, lower blood pressure and reduce the overall risk of cardiovascular disease, prevent bacteria from attaching to teeth, and slow the progression of tumors.
Pomegranate seeds are additional, potent antioxidants with anti-inflammatory effects, and in scientific studies of rats, the juice of pomegranates effectively increased testosterone, luteinizing hormone, and follicle stimulating hormone. Scientists also noted a reduction in sperm deformities caused by oxidative stress, when test subjects were regularly fed pomegranate juice.
In addition to the sexual health benefits of this sweet seed, studies indicate that pomegranates have the power to reverse metabolic syndrome (a condition or group of risk factors which typically precede diseases such as diabetes and stroke) and may act to prevent the growth of yeast.
All of the seeds found in this apple salad contain phytochemicals which reduce and prevent inflammation in the body, in addition to a great deal of plant protein, and a host of vitamins and minerals necessary for optimum health and hormone balance.
Walnuts are incredible little guys. They contain a type of polyphenol known as ellagitannins (ET) as well as Omega 3, essential fatty acids, which your body requires but cannot produce on its own.
ETs have been proven to prevent the initiation and progression of cancer due to their cytotoxic nature. In fact, the ETs actually cause cancer cells to commit “suicide”, a process known as apoptosis. And, when combined with the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of Omega 3’s, you’ve got an almost unstoppable force against all disease including, but not limited to cardiovascular disease, and numerous neurodegenerative diseases.
Another of the very few plant sources of Omega 3’s, flaxseed oil provides this vital nutrient which required to eliminate internal inflammation – the foundation of all disease – and boost the immune system.
In numerous studies, Omega 3 polyunsaturated fats have been shown to prevent heart disease and stroke, enhance brain function, protect against cancer, and reduce incidences of lupus, eczema, and rheumatoid arthritis.
