The most definitive predictor of how long you will live, and what your biological age is, is the length of your telomeres. I say biological age, because this can be very different from your chronological age. Your chronological age is simply the number of years you’ve been on the planet. However, your biological age can be years younger or years older, depending primarily on lifestyle choices and environmental factors, which have a profound impact on the length of your telomeres.
What Is A Telomere And What Does It Do?
So what is a telomere and what determines its length? A telomere is best described as a cap on the end of each strand of our DNA. Its job is to protect our chromosomes and genes from damage or from touching each other and fusing together. Scientists often liken telomeres to the plastic tip at the end of a shoelace. It holds everything together and keeps it from fraying.
There are 92 telomeres in each human cell, and they become shorter each time a cell divides and replicates, which is happening all day, every day, in virtually every part of your body. When telomeres become too short, our cells can no longer function properly and divide, causing the cells to die off, shortening your lifespan.
Diseases And Other Health Issues Related To Short Telomeres
Short telomeres are associated with and linked to everything from a decrease in bone density in women, to many forms of cancer, stroke, certain types of dementia, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other ailments. There have also been studies showing that telomere length is directly related to how your genes behave, act and react, a process known as gene expression. Additionally, due to the rapid turn-over of cells in your hair, skin and immune system, these parts of your body and overall well being are greatly affected by telomere length.

Obviously, short and decreasing telomere size is of major importance, and the quest to lengthen your telomeres, or keep them long for an extended period of time, is something that everyone should be concerned with.
Although telomeres begin to shorten as a natural process of aging, there are things that cause them to shrink more rapidly, whereby accelerating the aging process. The biggest telomere enemies are:

So what can you begin doing immediately to keep your telomeres as long as possible? Well, a 2013 telomere research study shed some light on not only retaining the length of telomeres, but actually increasing the length. The study, conducted by the University of San Francisco and Preventative Medicine Research Institute, involved men with prostate cancer. A control group was established, with men that made no diet and lifestyle changes, in order to accurately assess the findings. The 5 year study ultimately revealed that the men who switched to a plant based diet and took part in moderate, weekly exercise and stress reducing activities, such as stretching, breathing and meditation, had a 10% growth in the length of their telomeres. And, while 10 percent may not sound like a lot, consider the fact that young people have telomeres that are 8,000 to 10,000 nucleotides long. So essentially, a 10 percent increase in size could equate to the addition of several years of life, and that was after only 5 years of lifestyle modification.
